Como was named after Italy’s magnificent Lake Como.

1882: Construction of a rail line between Oatley and Jannali began. Workers lived in a railway camp at the southern end of the Georges River bridge.

1884: A school was opened at the railway camp for children of the workers. It was called the Woronora School, but once the workers moved on, it was no longer needed and closed.

1921: The Como area had become increasingly popular for young couples to buy land and raise their families. Como Public School was opened.

1945: A petition was sent to the Minister for Education requesting the relocation of Como Public School to a site more suitable to the majority of the pupils.

1946: A list was made of the children at Como School and divided into two groups: those who lived in the Como East area (including Carina Bay, Caravan Head and Coronation Bay) and those who lived in the developing Como West area. It was decided that another school was needed to cater for the growing number of children in the Como West area.

1947: The site for Como West School was acquired; three acres costing 1050 pounds. It was bounded by Woronora Crescent, Warraba, Wolger and Taplin Streets.

1948: Approval for an Infants School at Como West was made with plans to develop later into a Primary School as the need arose.

1950: The Como West Infants School opened with 70 students. It was a double portable classroom. Miss C. Drury was the Mistress. From the 1950’s onwards the area continued to flourish and expand. More young families settled in the Como area and the school grew. Timber weather-board buildings with wide verandahs were added as time went by. The bushy setting of the playground encouraged imaginary games at lunch-time. There was a great sense of community at Como West.

1994: On January 8th the community was devastated when a bushfire destroyed the school. For a year classes were held in demountables while a new school was built.

1995: The new Como West School was opened on the site of the original school.

2000: Como West Public School celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary. Many past students, parents and teachers shared fond memories of their happy association with the school.
