    • Peer Support
The Peer Support Program provides dynamic peer led programs which foster the physical, social and mental wellbeing of students Kindergarten to Year 5. It consists of leadership training and peer led sessions. Peer leaders facilitate each session, with the support of a supervising teacher. These sessions run for approximately 30 – 40 minutes at the same time once a week. Each group consists of approximately 10 – 12 students, from Kindergarten to Year 5 and a Year 6 Peer leader. The Year 6 Peer leaders are briefed for approximately 30 minutes, at least one day prior to each session.

  • Band
Children from years 3 – 6 may join the school band. Band members have ½ hour instrument tuition and ½ hour band practice each week. Students are also expected to practise at home – 3 x 15 minute sessions weekly would be great.

  • Choir
Students at Como West have the opportunity to participate in a junior or senior choir. The choir performs at various school functions. Most notably, it has a tradition of participation in the Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival, held each year at the Sutherland Civic Centre. Both choirs meet and rehearse each week. Choir fosters the development of aural skills, memory retention and confidence while engaging students in a fun and varied repertoire compiled especially for children.

  • Dance
Como West P.S has an outstanding reputation in dance. Each year, we offer 90 students in years 1-6 the opportunity to participate in the school dance program. The dance groups are taught by Ettinghausen’s Dynamic Arts. There are many performance opportunities throughout the year such as Education Week at Westfields Miranda/Menai Marketplace, Grandparents' Day the Regional Dance Festival, Shire Youth on Parade, Kurrunulla Eisteddfod, Grandparents' Day, The Big Day Out (school fete) and the school’s presentation evening. Over the past couple of years, we have been successful in gaining placement in the Schools Spectacular. For this event, 12-16 of our strongest senior dancers are selected to represent our school in this prestigious event.

  • Public Speaking
Como West P.S enjoys a fine reputation in public speaking and we pride ourselves on our quality public speaking program. All students in years K-6, participate in an intensive public speaking program in Term 3. The program requires students to deliver two speeches: a prepared speech and an impromptu speech. An in-class public speaking competition is held and students are selected from each class to participate in the Stage competition. Stage winners then go on to represent our school in the Western Zone District competition at the end of Term 3.

Another competition students at Como West are able to participate in is the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition. The competition aims to heighten students’ awareness of multicultural issues whilst developing their interest and skills in public speaking.

  • Debating
Como West P.S has established an inter-school debating program with some of our neighbouring schools. The program aims to develop students’ skills and confidence in debating, in a fun and supportive environment. The emphasis is on
participation and providing a unique opportunity for students from local schools to meet and learn together. The program consists of a full-day workshop, weekly meetings and 3 rounds of debates. The program culminates in early Term 4, with a “friendly” final.

    • Garden Club
      Students
have been involved in regenerating a native garden.  This began after the bush fire destroyed much of the vegetation. Students of all ages have been involved in planting and caring for the garden ever since that time.  All are welcome to join the lunch time work groups.  The tasks involve watering, weeding, mulching and general tidying of the area.  The purpose of the garden is to create ecosystems where native plants and animals can thrive and where students can learn about natural habitats.

A 'no-dig' garden has been established to involve students in growing fresh vegetables.

    • Buddies
Each year the Year 6 students buddy up with Kindergarten students. Depending on the numbers some Year 6 students may have more than 1 Kindergarten student as their buddy. During Term 1 the Year 6 students role is to help with the transition of Kindergarten students into school. Also, during Term1, Year 6 buddies assist Kindergarten teachers with the setting the setting-up and running of Kindergarten sport.

  • Parliament - Como West Public School Student Leaders
Como West Public School Parliament consists of 8 year 6 students.  These 8 students are elected by their peers (year 2-6) and staff in Term 3 of year 5.

The Parliament comprises of a Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, SP and 5 Ministers in Sport, Arts, Environment, Charity and Health and Safety.

Their role is firstly as a group to run the weekly primary assembly. At this time they lead the assembly, hand out certificates and give announcements. Each member of the Parliament has his/her role relating to their position.

Como West has offered this program to students for several years. Students may select to participate in 1-2 sessions each week. The sessions commence at 3.30pm and finish at 4.30pm and are held on the school grounds.
