    Mathematics
    Mathematics is divided into 5 strands: Number, Space and Geometry,
    Patterns and Algebra, Measurement and Data.

    Mathematics K-6 aims to develop in students;

    • favourable attitudes in mathematics.
    • a sound understanding of mathematical concepts, processes and strategies.
    • the ability to recognise mathematics in everyday situations.
    • the ability to apply their mathematics to analyse situations and solve real-life problems.
    • appropriate language for the effective communication of mathematical ideas and experiences.
    • an appreciation of mathematical of technologies, including calculators and computers.
    • ways to creatively express new ideas and discoveries.

  • English

     

     


    The teaching and learning of English at Como West PS follows the NSW DET English syllabus. The teaching staff
    regularly participate in staff development and attend inservice courses. New ideas, resources and methods are shared amongst staff to ensure that the children are receiving the most up to date and relevant teaching experiences possible.

    English is taught from Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) through to Late Stage 3 (Year 6). Children need to master the outcomes set for each stage before progressing to the next stage and so are grouped according to their individual reading level.

    English incorporates the following strands and constitutes a large sector of each teaching day.
    Talking and Listening
    Reading
    Writing: Producing Texts, Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling, Handwriting, Using Computers.

  • Human Environment and Its Environment (HSIE)
    Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) was previously known as Social Studies. In this course students learn about the people in Australia and other parts of the world; and the social and physical environments in which they live.

    They also develop particular skills in:
    • acquiring information
    • using an enquiry process
    • and in social and civic participation.

    HSIE contributes to the development of skills from other key learning areas, such as reading, writing, graphing, designing and making, and visually representing an idea or viewpoint. Students are also encouraged to develop positive values and attitudes about themselves, others, the world that they live in and their future.

  • Science and Technology
    The Science and Technology syllabus provides learning experiences which involve both scientific and technological content and processes.

    Students develop knowledge and understandings of:
    • Built Environments
    • Information and Communication
    • Living Things
    • Products and Services
    Earth and Its Surroundings.

    Science and Technology education requires that students develop skills in:
    • the process of investigating
    • the process of designing and making
    the use of technology.

    Students additionally engage in learning experiences which will enable them to develop positive and informed values and attitudes:
    • towards themselves
    • towards others
    towards Science and Technology.

  • Creative and Practical Arts
    Creative Arts K-6 addresses the artforms of Visual Arts, Music, Drama and Dance.

    In Visual Arts students develop knowledge, skills and understanding in making artworks. They investigate different subject matter such as people, objects and places; use a variety of expressive forms such as painting, drawing and sculpture; and learn to consider the audience of their art work.

    In Music students develop knowledge, skills and understanding in performing music. By singing, playing and moving, they learn music of different styles and from different times and cultures. They also learn to organise sound into musical compositions using concepts such as pitch, duration and dynamics.

    In Drama students develop knowledge, skills and understanding in making drama. Students work collaboratively,taking on roles and creating imagined situations. Their performances will be shaped by a variety of drama forms such as mime, puppetry and storytelling.

    In Dance, students develop knowledge, skills and understanding of dance. They will compose and perform their own dances using the elements and contexts of dance from different times and cultures.

  • Personal Development / Health / Physical Education
    The aim of this syllabus is to develop in each student the knowledge and understanding, skills and values and attitudes needed to lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives. In doing so, the syllabus forms the basis for students to adopt a responsible and productive role in society.

    The subject matter of PD,H,PE is organised into eight interrelated strands.

    • Interpersonal Relationships

    There are five essential skills that students will develop from PD,H,PE.
